Early Stage Research Sharing Leads to Change

The idea of sharing is not unique to humanity. Early stage research sharing in the health science fields, however, is a relativity new concept. Social sharing of early stage research tends to lead to further conversations and collaboration helping to support the overall scientific progress of a given idea. The dots get connected when questions are posed, dialogue ensues, and scientists uncover theories leading to successful outcomes.

Our team was intrigued to read a new paper submission posted 24 Jan 2020: “Early Transmissibility Assessment of a Novel Coronavirus in Wuhan, China” , a working paper submitted to SSRN by Harvard University, Computational Health Informatics Program faculty Maimuna Majumder, PhD, and Kenneth D. Mandl, MD, Boston Children’s Hospital. The downloads for their paper continue to soar on SSRN. There are 2,133 unique paper downloads and 7,726 abstract views, 10 references (and counting). Early stage research supports the concept of promoting better research faster.

Moreover, Marimuna Majumder’s twitter post made quite the impression on social watchers today. And, created excitement at our SSRN offices…

It’s why we do what we do. We support researchers to disseminate important research early on, before publication. It allows the researcher community to share important findings, supports collaboration amongst peers and colleagues to refine drafts to complete the final research output in peer-reviewed publications.” says SSRN’s managing director, Gregg Gordon.

PlumX Print Metrics

PlumX Metrics is Plum Analytics’ comprehensive, item-level metrics that provide insights into the ways people interact with individual pieces of research output (articles, conference proceedings, book chapters, and many more) in the online environment. Collectively known as PlumX Metrics, these metrics are divided into categories to help make sense of the huge amounts of data involved and to enable analysis by comparing like with like. PlumX Metrics are available on SSRN Abstract Pages. Learn more about PlumX Metrics sources.

Usage, captures, mentions, and social channel metrics are computed for every author paper on SSRN. Here’s a snapshot of the “Early Transmissibility Assessment of a Novel Coronavirus in Wuhan, China”:

Early stage research available on SSRN
Emerging and rapidly evolving healthcare emergencies require the quick dissemination of research. The growing role of early stage research, sometimes referred to as preprints, was acknowledged in the Ebola and Zika virus outbreaks as a way of ‘accelerating the dissemination of scientific findings to support responses to infectious disease outbreaks’. SSRN, Elsevier’s world-leading platform devoted to the rapid worldwide dissemination of early stage research, is committed to sharing coronavirus related research from authors immediately.
